Tramp Art
Memory Box//Depression era
Tramp Art in the United States dates back to the late 19th century, and is characterized by its use of discarded wood, such as cigar boxes and shipping crates. Its use of simple tools to create detailed, ornate designs adds to its charm and craft, where intricate carving, layered applied form and idiosyncratic technique make this art form uniquely American. The tradition of tramp art is often associated with itinerant workers or “trams” who traveled across the country, making and selling these items to support themselves.

It’s important to note that the makers themselves most likely didn’t refer to themselves as “tramps,” as their work is meticulous, thoughtful and in many cases a result of highly skilled workers who were unemployed in their trades, which included clockmaking, fine carpentry, and other skilled crafts. We love the sculptural, personal and whimsical aspects of this form of art, and it is a perfect compliment to modern art in just about any scenario.
